What To Watch Out For In Parkinson's Disease

There are basically four primary types of motor symptoms of the Parkinson's disease upon which its treatment depends. These are resting tremors, rigidity, postural instability and bradykinesia. Besides, there are also various secondary symptoms that are also considered as crucial in the diagnosis of the disease. These symptoms appear differently to different victims. As such, some patients may experience face tremors as the primary symptom, while other patient might not experience it. Moreover, the disease develops quickly in some patients, but may not develop so fast in others.

Now I will give you a brief idea about four primary motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Resting Tremor: Tremor is the most noticeable and most well-recognized symptom of PD (Parkinson's disease). At the beginning stage of PD, more than 70 percent of the patients face a slight tremor. They can experience it in the hand or foot or even in the jaw or face. Though the rest of the PD victims do not face tremor at early stage, still it develops among most of them along the course of the disease.

It is commonly known as a resting tremor as it generally appears during the relaxation of the muscles of the patient. It appears as an oscillating movement and disappears with voluntary movement. It means it affects a part of the body of the patient and makes it tremble when it is not working and disappears when the patient begins to move. As PD develops, the tremor spreads to the other parts of the body, but still exists most apparently on the original occurrence part of the body.

Rigidity: Rigidity means inflexibility of the muscles which may create cramp and pain. It is also known as increased muscle tone. Muscles usually stretch while moving, and stay relaxed while resting. Rigidity makes the muscle tone of the limb (which is affected) rigid, making it tensed thus, motion range decreases. A patient having rigidity may be unable to swing his/ her arms while walking because of the tightness of the muscles.

Bradykinesia: It usually refers to the phenomenon of experiencing slow movement or incomplete movement. "Brady" means slow or decreased which is why a bradykinesia affected person may walk with short and shuffling foot steps called "shuffling gait". Victim faces difficulty while execution of movement as well as planning, or initiating it. Even victim's ongoing movement can be suddenly stopped by it.

Postural Instability: It means instability in standing or impaired balance or coordination. Considering this along with other symptoms of PD, it makes the patient more likely to experience falls and injuries. Besides, the patient may face difficulty while making turns or sudden movements. This symptom may also affect speaking as well as swallowing.

Various secondary motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease include drooling, fatigue, cramped handwriting, having tendency of leaning forward, sexual dysfunction etc. Patients of PD may also have several non-motor symptoms such as depression, disruption or problem in sleep etc.

Generally, these four main symptoms are distinct in Parkinson's Disease, thus entailing a greater responsibility to care on the part of the PD patients' families and relatives to keep the patient free of harm as much as possible.
