Managing A Parkinson's Disease Patient

Parkinson's disease (PD) can create difficulties in daily life activities and make living very difficult. The stiffness of the muscle and tremors resulted from PD can significantly hamper daily activities of the patient. It hampers more as the disease develops. Simple daily tasks such as taking a bath, dressing, etc. become difficult and frustrating. To get relief from those difficulties or frustration, a proper management of Parkinson's disease is very essential which can help a patient perform daily activities with less difficulties and enjoy his/her life while dealing with the limitations brought about by the disease.

Goal of PD Management

Parkinson's disease requires broad-based and proper planned management which should consist of the patient as well as his/her family's education, physiotherapy, exercise, medicine regimen, etc. A patient can consult a professional therapist for better management of PD in the personal and working life. As symptoms vary from person to person, the treatment should also be customized according to the requirements of the individual patient. Sufficient essential information should be available to PD patients so that he/she can make knowledgeable decisions in managing his/her own disease. It is essential to ensure that the diagnosis of the disease is correct as misdiagnosis can lead to poor management of the disease. The aim of proper management of Parkinson's disease is to help the patient to be well-adjusted with the disease, reduce distress and minimize symptoms; thus controlling or managing the disease subsequently.

Exercise

Exercise plays a crucial part in the better management of the Parkinson's symptoms for patients. Various types of flexible and stretching exercise can help in improving muscles movement and flexibility and make daily activities easier for the patient. If the patient can still tolerate an exercise which is dynamic, it is best to do it. However, in advanced cases of PD, most patients are even unable to ambulate or even sit up on bed because of poor muscle coordination and balance. In this case, the patient can be treated with range of motion exercises- those exercises which makes use only of the joints like the wrist, knees, elbows and the likes.

Medications

Patient should take medication regularly and on time for proper management of tremors. The benefits of certain medication reduce after a specific period, so the patient should be aware of that. If something wrong happens, the patient should immediately consult with his/her doctor and make changes of medication as well as adjustment of treatment schedule.

Researchers say that fruits and vegetables help in protecting nerve cells and help functioning them properly and thus give patient a better management of his/her Parkinson's symptoms. Patient can also take "gait training" (it means doing practice of new standing, turning, walking ways) at their home for managing PD, but this is often something that had to be allowed when the patient got his/her health insurance quotes, which is often not the case. Besides, patient can also deal better with PD by making slight changes in their home decoration so that they can have better control of their movement.

It is important to remember that treating PD patients is not just the responsibility of the physician but also that of the family because they are the ones in close contact with the patient. It is important that they are knowledgeable about the disease, the treatments and how to deal with the disabilities of their family member with PD.
